Cardinal Wiseman is a secondary school in Coventry and part of the Romero Catholic Academy.
The school is passionate about developing pupils both academically and pastorally to help young people to be the best they can be.
Alongside their pupils, the school invests in its building to create a positive and welcoming working environment. Recently they decided that their toilet facilities were no longer fit for purpose and called in FPM to help resolve the problem. One issue was that one toilet block was very outdated and combined the facilities for both female staff and pupils. The other problem was the lack of facilities in another area of the school.
Following a site survey, FPM recommended a course of action and proceeded with the much-needed building works.
Firstly, the outdated toilet block was reconfigured to create 2 separate washrooms: one unisex block for adults and a one for female students. For the adults, FPM’s design created 2 unisex cubicles, each self-contained with its own hand basin and hand drying facilities and although the reconfiguration took space from the existing toilet block, only one student cubicle was sacrificed. Both facilities were upgraded to a contemporary design.
The second project involved reclaiming space from an underused food technology classroom. Some demolition work was needed to create the new girls’ and boys’ toilet blocks, along with the installation of new ventilation and drainage systems.
The work carried out also included disabled toilets, adding to the facilities already in place at the school to meet DDA regulations.
The school were really pleased with the results and the fact they had managed to maximise existing space to meet the needs of both staff and pupils.
